MSDS, or Material Safety Data Sheet, is a basic document in the supply chain between a manufacturer or supplier and its downstream customers. It is the basic document in the supply chain between the manufacturer or supplier and downstream users for information on potential hazards and risks connected with the transport of specific substances. The main purpose of preparing a Safety Data Sheet is a document which is based on Regulation No 1907/2008 of the European Parliament and of the Council concerning the Registration, Evaluation, Authorisation and Restriction of Chemicals, which is also known as REACH.

Purpose of Safety Data Sheets

The MSDDS is mainly intended for those companies that carry out activities involving hazardous substances and mixtures. The purpose of the Safety Data Sheet is to provide access to information for the safety and protection of the working environment and workers. The document must be available at all times during transport services, as well as during the storage of substances, so that any interested person who wishes to obtain data on the potential risks.

Information contained in the Safety Data Sheet in accordance with REACH regulations:

  1. Identification of the substance or mixture and of the undertaking providing the service
  2. Hazard identification data including indication of the classification of the substance or mixture
  3. Information on ingredients of substances and mixtures
  4. First aid measures in case of exposure to the substance or mixture and indications for treatment of affected person(s) and medical attention
  5. Fire-fighting measures, including appropriate extinguishing media and hazards related to hazardous substances and mixtures
  6. Accidental release measures including containment and personal protective equipment and precautions
  7. Handling the storage of dangerous substances and mixtures
  8. Personal protective equipment and exposure controls
  9. Chemical and physical properties of substances and mixtures
  10. Stability and reactivity of substances and mixtures
  11. Toxicological parameters of the substances and mixtures
  12. Ecological information
