Crane operator approval - what conditions must be met?

Overhead cranes are handling equipment used, among others, in industrial halls, sidings, storage yards or shipyards. According to Polish regulations, cranes may only be operated by a person holding an overhead crane licence. In addition to obtaining the licence, the employee must fulfil additional conditions.

Qualification UDT for gantry cranes are awarded after passing the exam before the committee of the Office of Technical Inspection. The exam is taken before the exam crane course - it provides participants with extensive knowledge and teaches how to use the devices in practice.

Overhead crane licences are issued in two categories:

  • II S - overhead travelling cranes, hoists and winches operated from the working level and mobile workshop cranes
  • I S - overhead travelling cranes, hoists and winches operated from the working level or from a cabin, and mobile workshop cranes

To enrol on a crane course, you must be at least 18 years old, have a minimum of primary education and no contraindications to working in the profession confirmed by a medical examination.

In addition to the UDT qualification, an employee wishing to work as an overhead crane operator must meet additional requirements that stem from UDT requirements and health and safety rules.

Conditions for allowing the crane operator to work:

  • should know his/her responsibilities in detail
  • should have knowledge of the construction and purpose of the crane equipment, electrical apparatus and other components
  • should have knowledge about the safe operation of the crane
  • should know the properties of electric current
  • should receive practical training under the guidance of an experienced crane driver
  • should know the communication signals with the truck
  • should be examined by a doctor at regular intervals to check his vision and hearing
